HMV issues plastic gift cards for purchase and spending in-store. They cannot be used online. They last 24 months from last use including balance enquiry*. There is no online balance checker but you can go in-store or call 0333 323 4754 (options 1, 1) for an automated service. You don't need the PIN when you call which is good. You never need to scratch off the PIN.

* The online FAQs state: "If an hmv Gift Card is not used for a consecutive period of 24 months either for spending, adding value or simply making an in-store balance enquiry, the card will be cancelled. This is in accordance with point 8 of the card’s Terms and Conditions"
