Nintendo issue plastic eShop cards with a silver panel that contain a code. The electronic only version of the card is called eShop Fund Code to distinguish them from Download Codes which are different.

How to redeem: They can be applied to your eShop account using your Nintendo console, from where you can buy downloadable content for that console. The codes are redeemed in full, and cannot be moved to another console once applied.

How to balance check: You can check the value of a code by attempting to redeem it from your console at which point the value is displayed and you get a chance to confirm or bail out.

eShop cards never expire.
